The Fiqh Council of North America recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar'i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. FCNA uses Makkah al-Mukarrama as a conventional point and takes the position that the conjunction must take place before sunset in Makkah and moon must set after sunset in Makkah.

On the basis of this method the dates of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr for the year 1439 AH are established as follows:

Ramadan 1439 AH: Wednesday, May 16, 2018
The Astronomical New Moon is on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 11:47 Universal Time (2:47 p.m. Makkah time). Sunset at Makkah on May 15 is at 6:52 p.m., while moonset is at 6:54 p.m. Moon is born before sunset in Makkah and moonset is after sunset. Therefore first day of Ramadan 1439 is on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, insha'Allah. First Tarawih prayer will be on Tuesday night.

Eidul Fitr 1439 AH: Friday, June 15, 2018
The Astronomical New Moon is on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 19:43 Universal Time. (10:43 p.m. Makkah time). Sunset at Makkah on June 13 is 7:04 p.m. and moonset is at 6:43 p.m. Moon is born before sunset and moonset is after sunset. Therefore first day of Shawwal 1439 is not on June 14, but is on Friday, June 15, 2018, insha'Allah.

Eidul Adha 1439 AH: The Astronomical New Moon is on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 9:57 UT. Sunday, August 12, 2018 is expected to be the 1st day of Dhul Hijjah 1439. The day of Arafah – the main day of Hajj - is expected to be on Monday, August 20, 2018 and so the Eidul Adha 1439 is expected on Tuesday, August 21, 2018.

Following its adopted current criteria for Eidul Adha, the Fiqh Council of North America announces that the final determination of the date of Eidul Adha will be contingent on the announcement by the Hajj authorities in Makkah of the day of 'Arafah, in which case Eidul Adha will be the day following the day of 'Arafah.

May Allah (swt) keep us on the right path, and accept our fasting and prayers. Ameen. For more detailed information, please visit: www.fiqhcouncil.org orwww.moonsighting.com
